Activity Idea: Strawberry Yogurt Shake - Taste and Learn
Source: Healthy Kids Challenge, Balance My Day™ nutrition curriculum (Grades 3-5)
Description: Kids Taste and Learn about how to prepare a recipe and grocery list of ingredients
Grade: 3-5
Recipe Ingredients:

Makes 32 - 1/3 cup tasting samples or 8 full servings (1-1/3 cup)

  • 2 cups unsweetened pineapple juice
  • 3 cups plain low fat yogurt
  • 6 cups frozen, unsweetened strawberries (2-20 oz. bags needed)

  1. Gather ingredients and utensils. Let kids assist.
  2. Split ingredients in half to make 2 batches.
  3. Using a large blender, add the first batch of ingredients, in order listed, to the blender container.
  4. Puree at medium speed, until thick and smooth.
  5. Serve 1/3 cup tasting samples in 5 oz. paper kitchen cups.
  6. Fix the second batch and serve.
  7. Have kids clean up work area and utensils with warm soapy water. Rinse with clean water.
  8. Gather kids and have them make a grocery list and for each ingredient, the number of package units needed to prepare the recipe.
  9. Calculate the number needed for each of the packaged options:
    • 6 oz. and 46 oz. can of pineapple juice
    • 6 oz., 8 oz., 32 oz. yogurt containers
    • 10 oz. and 20 oz. frozen strawberry bags
  10. Explain the yogurt shake is a great breakfast or snack drink and a way to eat more fruits in the day. Have kids imagine this scenario: They have a friend over and want to fix two servings as a snack. How would they reduce the size of the recipe for 2 servings? (Answer: Divide by 4). How would they need to adjust the amounts of ingredients? Prepare a grocery list for a 2-serving recipe.
