Activity Idea: Taste & Learn, Egg-Me-On Sunrise Sandwich

Description: Kids help make a recipe, taste, and discuss recipe nutrients
Grade: 6-8
Recipe Ingredients:

Makes 32-1/8 sandwich) tasting samples:

  • 4 whole wheat English muffins
  • 4 medium eggs
  • 1/2 cup shredded reduced fat cheddar cheese
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1/4 tsp. pepper
  • dessert plates, plastic forks and napkins, enough for each child
  • Cooking utensils: oven, baking sheet, hot pads, knife, spatula, medium-size mixing bowl, measuring cups and spoons

Directions:

    1. Preheat the oven to 450F.
    2. To prevent the spread of germs, have kids wash hands with soap and water before handling food or utensils. Let them assist.
    3. Lightly coat baking sheet with cooking spray.
    4. Open English muffins and place "inside-up" on baking sheet.
    5. In a medium-size mixing bowl, beat eggs, cheese, salt and pepper with a fork until well blended.
    6. With a measuring cup, scoop egg mixture out of the bowl and pour onto each muffin half, keeping as much as possible on the muffins.
    7. Bake 10 minutes or until egg mixture is no longer runny and cheese has melted.
    8. Cut muffin halves into quarters and serve on a dessert plate with a fork and napkin for tasting.
    9. Have kids clean up work area and utensils with warm soapy water. Rinse with clean water.
