Food Service Creates Healthy Appeal

Principal Mary Pierce is rallying everyone together to reach kids and families with healthy messages and better nutrition at A.V. Norrell!

  • Cafeteria staff are creating excitement on “Lucky Tray Day” with random trays chosen for a prize
  • Kids are grabbing the popular new “Panda pack” offered for sack lunch which contains a combination of the following:
    • Meat or cheese on bread or crackers
    • Fresh vegetables with low fat dip
    • Fresh or canned fruit
    • Baked chips or low fat crackers
    • Milk
  • Teachers are receiving ideas for non-food incentives and are using healthy popcorn & movie or pizza party reward for their “Hard Working Hornet Award”
  • Community agencies, such as Jr. League and Communities in Schools, are tapped to help reach families with evening events
  • Parents are attending the evening events that include a free, nutritious, TASTY meal

In addition to working to increase participation in school meals, Mary is on the school district committee formulating the wellness plan for next year and is looking ahead at the impact these policies will have on everyone!

A Step or More Each Month

AV Norrell students, staff, parents and community are “getting on board” by encouraging a small, healthy change-at least once a month.

  • The cafeteria bulletin board features a “Fruit of the Month”.
  • Students look forward to tasting specially ordered fruit, courtesy of the food service manager!
  • Teachers are enjoying a Pilates class.
  • The Health Department provides a free "Rock Richmond" exercise class for all.

AV Norrell is moving in healthy directions!
