Healthy Happenings
Success
is measured one small step at a time for Cold Harbor
Elementary School and they are on the move this year
toward a healthier school environment.
Counting
those steps, 25 staff, 20 kids and their parents participated
in Ukop’s 10K fundraiser. They included a pedometer
contest to see which grade walked the most!
More
movement toward their goals includes:
- Ala
Carte choices such as cookies and ice cream offered
only 1 day per week
-
Phone messaging system used by teachers to encourage
kids to try a healthy snack
-
Classroom lessons developed on “what is a healthy
snack”
-
Healthy recipes included in school newsletter
-
Local radio station hosts an “End of the Year”
school wide assembly with the theme “Exercise
for Success” using a healthy choices focus
A
big step will take place as the KidLink team presents
their Wellness policy to the school health advisory
board and then school board over the next few months.
All these small steps help kids move toward a healthier
lifestyle for years to come!
Collaboration Brings C.H.A.N.G.E
A
shining example of the Healthy Kids Challenge mission
statement “Use every day ways to guide schools,
communities, and programs in creating solutions to help
kids and families Connect Health And Needs, Get Excited
(C.H.A.N.G.E)” can be found at the Cold Harbor
Elementary School. School nurse, Cathy Smith, reports
- People
from several existing programs were tapped to create
a dynamic KidLink team.

that featured nutritious food choices.

with small, simple steps.
-

lifestyle changes!
