"Drink Think" When Choosing Beverages

HEAR

Kids have so many drink options from which to choose! Help them make healthy choices (water, 100% juice and low fat milk) with the following classroom and youth group resources and activities.

SEE

DO

Try this fun activity from the "Drink Think" Health Works! booklet with young kids!

Pre K-2: Crazy Calcium Catch (Kids will identify 3-A-Day milk servings and participate in active play.)

Materials: MyPyramid Poster, 1-2 eight oz. or larger cups, white scrap paper to crumple into 2-3 inch balls

Directions:

  • Review the MyPyramid for Kids food groups. Point out the milk group and the message-"Milk-Get your Calcium Rich Foods".
  • Ask the kids to crumple the scrap paper into tight balls. Talk about making the balls dense so they'll be strong just like calcium and active play make our bones strong.
  • Have groups of 8-10 kids form a circle. Choose the first person that will toss the ball to the next person in the circle who catches it in his cup, who in turn, will toss it to the next person and so on around the circle.
  • As each person catches the ball, have them shout out the following words, one at a time in sequence: One-Two-3-A-Day-Milk Builds Strong Bones!
  • If someone drops the ball, every one shouts "Bone Break" and the count starts over.

Take Note: Recipe Contest Deadline Approaching! Enter now and get involved in the fun and prizes!

Healthy Drink Tips for the Family

  • Enjoy low fat milk, 100% fruit juice or water with your fast food meal, instead of soda.
  • Provide a cool 100% juice drink or water in the car as you pick up kids after school or sports practice.
  • Think all drinks in your plan. Diet soft drinks seem harmless, but often take the place of milk or other healthy drink choices.
