Serving Up Healthful Whole Grains at School

HEAR

The school cafeteria provides a great opportunity for kids to explore and experiment with new food tastes, like whole grains! Turn the cafeteria into a "learning lab" by offering a fun-hearted whole grain promotion encouraging kids and their families to "make half their grains whole"!

SEE

DO

  1. Decorate the cafeteria walls with Whole Grains Council dowloadable    information sheets and set up a display table in the lunchroom with educational materials to view or take home.

  2. Offer whole grain cereals at breakfast like hot oatmeal, buckwheat or multigrain cereals. At lunch, try whole grain breads or side dishes like brown rice or barley soup. Check out the Whole Grains Council school foodservice recipe ideas and learn about the The HealthierUS School Challenge!

  3. Offer a fun, taste-testing event in the cafeteria for kids to see and try varied whole grain examples, like brown rice, barley, rye, oats, buckwheat or quinoa. Let them vote on their favorite and try to offer it on the school menu periodically.
