Provide a message to increase awareness of knowledge/skills Get Ready to Stir Up Health in HEAR Healthy Kids Challenge announces the 8th annual middle school recipe contest, “Stirring Up Health™”. “Stirring Up Health™” is brought to you by featured sponsor, Del Monte, a leader in the food industry making a difference in the market place with tasty, nutritious and family friendly food products; and educational partners, Johnson & Wales University and Home Baking Association. The recipe contest provides a fun way for 7th and 8th grade students to relate to food, health, and basic cooking skills. Engage the kids you know to create or modify a recipe to make it healthier using Del Monte fruits, vegetables, or tomatoes. SEE Check out the Web site information about "Stirring Up Health™”. Use it and other ideas from the HKC Web page, Classroom Ideas . Challenge kids to record their fruit and vegetable intake for a week. Encourage them to “Strive for Five” or more servings a day. Talk about how the recipe contest encourages kids to include fruits and veggies in breakfast foods, snacks and meal side dishes to reach their daily servings goal. HEAR - SEE - DO Tips for Newsletters Cut and paste a HEAR-SEE-DO tip each week into your own parent newsletters! Family Mealtime Pick at least one night a week to get your kids in the kitchen to help prepare the evening meal. Small children can add ingredients and mix, while older kids can chop and measure. When preparing the fruits and veggies for the meal, make the tasks fun and educational by talking about the rainbow of colors that fruits and veggies offer. Let kids know the more colors the better!
