Healthy Cost Conscious Snacks

HEAR

With a few tips and a little planning, healthy snacks CAN fit into a limited budget! Share the following ideas in a parent newsletter and/or post in the staff lounge.

SEE

  • Produce for Better Health Foundation - find tips for shopping and storing fruits and veggies to save on your produce budget

  • Iowa State Universtiy Extension "Spend Smart. Eat Smart." - an interactive game that helps consumers learn cost effective steps for purchasing, storing and preparing healthy foods

DO

  1. Planning ahead and making a shopping list are critical steps needed to prevent impulse buying and to use food dollars wisely.
    • Check your weekly grocery ads for healthy bargains while making your shopping list.
    • Purchase produce in season, and choose canned or frozen options in cost cutting quantities.

  2. Purchase non-perishable snack foods in cost effective bulk sizes. Prepackaged, single serving snacks are costly, so make a commitment to portion and package your own. Measure a serving of graham crackers, whole grain crackers, animal crackers, pretzels, low-sugar dry cereal, and bagel chips into snack size re-sealable plastic bags. Store the variety of snack bags in a bowl and allow the kids to choose when they need a snack!

  3. Healthy snacks are easy when you keep simple foods on hand!
    • cinnamon toast or raisin bread
    • a hard boiled egg
    • whole grain crackers with peanut butter
    • canned fruit
    • baby carrots or other cut up veggies with low fat Ranch dressing
    • low-fat cottage cheese or sliced cheeses
    • yogurt (buy in bulk and add canned fruit or granola)
    • healthy leftovers (such as spaghetti or fruit salad from dinner)
