DO

  1. Talk about the recipe contest opportunity with your class or youth group! Print out the "Stirring Up Health™” information Web page (include the Web page address) and send a copy home with the kids. Encourage them to share the information with family members and get cooking!

  2. Try out the following activity with a youth group or class to encourage label reading. Use it and other ideas from the HKC Web page, Classroom Ideas .

Using packaged food products, identify the amount of fiber and discuss how fiber comes from grains, fruits, vegetables, and legumes. Identify fat and sugar on the label. Use visuals to represent the amount of fat and sugar in one serving. Note: 1 tsp fat or sugar (1 sugar cube) is equivalent to 4 grams. Talk about how to use lower fat/sugar substitutions in recipes. Encourage kids to modify or create a recipe using fruits and veggies for the recipe contest! Did you know fruits can be fat replacers? Experiment!

Kids in Your Kitchen
Getting your kids in the kitchen to prepare a food item or meal can teach them science, math, culture and healthy eating habits. Try the ideas below to get your kids involved!

  • Show kids food science results: The rising of a biscuit from a chemical reaction (baking soda).
  • Allow kids to measure ingredients and discuss math fractions.
  • Encourage kids to help you prepare a traditional or holiday food item that connects with your family heritage.
  • When kids are helping in the kitchen, prepare a variety of foods (grains, fruits, veggies, dairy, meat and beans) to encourage healthy, balanced eating.
