Stay at School Field Trips

HEAR

Who says school kids have to go off-site to have an interactive, educational experience! Try these "stay at school" field trip suggestions!

SEE

DO

  1. Bring the grocery store experience to the classroom! Prior to the "trip" have classroom parents and school staff collect empty, clean food cans, boxes and containers to use for real-life examples. Utilize HKC's Food Museum booklet for hands on, kid friendly activities involving MyPyramid food groups, menu planning, label reading and healthy goal setting.

  2. Expose kids to basic cooking skills as a "trip"! Team up with the School Nutrition staff and allow kids to experience the preparation of school lunch, or in the classroom prepare a simple group baking recipe from Home Baking Association.

  3. Bring the "experts" to your classroom, instead of traveling to them.
    • Invite a veterinarian to speak about animal care and he/she may bring a pet or two.
    • Invite a chef to come talk about the restaurant industry and he/she might be willing to prepare a healthy snack.
    • Invite a dancer to teach a few steps or an aerobic instructor to get the kids' heart rate up.

Thought for the Day
"Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around." -- Leo Buscaglia
