Enjoy These Autumn Days with Physical Activity!

HEAR

Autumn provides glorious foliage colors, so get outside with the kids you lead for active play time. Try the outdoor activity ideas below!

SEE

  • HKC's Acting Up booklet - Fun 5-10 minute activities that combine math, social studies, health, & language skills with movement!

  • Street Play - Find simple, outdoor game ideas with few resources needed.

DO

  1. Incorporate "outside" active time into lesson plans and youth program activities.
    • Science lessons come to life when concepts can be seen or touched while walking outside.
    • Take kids for a walk outside as the group brainstorms project ideas, practices spelling words/vocabulary, or problem solves social study issues.
    • Try "Roman Numeral Run" in HKC's Acting Up booklet, page 24, to put math in motion! Kids will match the Roman Numeral on their card with the number posted on an outside wall or fence.
      • Ahead of time, prepare a set of large number cards and a set of Roman numeral cards that match the numbers on the large number cards. Tape the large number cards to the wall or fence.
      • Give each player a card that shows a Roman numeral.
      • Instruct players, when given a signal, to run and touch the correct number posted on the wall/fence that matches with the Roman numeral on their card.
      • Repeat as time allows.

  2. Reward kids for good behavior or goal accomplishments with outside active time! Whether it's time on the playground or a group game like "Duck, Duck, Goose" or "Red Light, Green Light"; kids need time in the day to run, jump, and get ACTIVE!

Thought for the Day
"Nobody grows old merely by living a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals. Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul."
-- Samuel Ullman
