Activity Idea: Healthy Snack'n Habits - Math Tasks

Source: Adapted from the HKC A La Cart Snack Fun booklet
Description: Kids discuss fruit & veggie snack options and use addition skills
Grade: 1-3
Supplies:
  • Blackboard, flipchart, or dry erase board

Directions:

  1. Discuss how snacks can be a healthy addition to a kid's day! Ask kids to think of fruit & veggie snacks and write them on the board.
  2. In addition, draw a month's calendar on the board beside the snack list.
  3. Ask kids if they had fruits or veggies for snacks Monday, Wednesday, and Friday every week of the month, how many fruit & veggie snacks would they have during the month?
  4. Place an "x" on all the Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays of the month, and count the number. Better yet, using the snack list, write in a different fruit or veggie for each of the designated days; then have students count the days!
  5. Discuss how eating fruits & veggie snacks can help kids reach their goal of 5-9 servings a day!

Optional: Challenge kids to choose more fruit & veggie snacks during the current month. Check progress each week.
