| Description: |
Kids identify breakfast foods from MyPyramid food groups |
| Grade: |
4-5 |
| Supplies: |
- Construction paper cut in 8' by 1" strips, to use as paper chain links, in the following colors: orange, green, red, yellow, blue, purple
- Glue sticks
- MyPyramid poster (www.mypyramid.gov)
|
|
Directions:
- Show kids the MyPyramid poster and explain the food groups.
- Have kids:
- Write the foods they ate for breakfast that day.
- Draw a MyPyramid and write their breakfast foods in the appropriate food groups.
- Use the following color code for paper strips to represent food groups in which they categorized their breakfast foods.
- Grains--orange; Veggies--green; Fruits--red; Milk--blue; Oils--yellow;
Meat & Beans--purple
- Choose 1 strip for each serving of food eaten. (For example: A breakfast consisting of a slice of toast with margarine, a container of yogurt, and a glass of juice--the student would select 1 orange strip, 1 red strip, 1 yellow strip and 1 blue strip.)
- Using a glue stick, form their own (Breakfast) chain with the paper strips they choose.
- After making the chain, ask students the following questions:
- Does their chain represent all 6 colors of the Food Guide Pyramid? If not, which colors are missing?
- What (if anything) would they need to add to their breakfast so that all colors are represented on their breakfast chain?
