February Tip of the Month
Drink Think!

Make a healthy SPLASH with a Drink Think. Choose water or low fat milk more often.

Activity Idea: Great Beverage Tastes!

Source: Healthy Kids Challenge, Food Museum booklet
Description: After a trip to the “Museum”, enhance learning with
a tasting activity

Grades: K-5

Supplies:

• 1-1/4 cups calcium-fortified orange juice
1-1/4 cups frozen mixed berries
1 cup sliced ripe banana
½ cup vanilla fat-free yogurt
1/3 cup nonfat dry milk
1-tablespoon sugar
5 oz. cups (1 per person for smoothie samples)

Calcium-rich milk makes a nutritious beverage for this Platt County Preschooler

Directions:

1. Prior to the activity, make sure all participants have thoroughly washed their hands and are following safe food practices.
2.  In a classroom or group setting, if time allows, let kids help measure and add the ingredients to the blender. If space or time is limited, measure the ingredients yourself and explain the amounts as the kids are watching. Process the ingredients until smooth.
3.  Explain to the kids that this smoothie makes an AWE-some breakfast option or snack! It offers more than 300 milligrams of calcium for strong bones, protein for a strong body, and fruit for healthy vitamins.
4. Pour taste testing smoothie samples into the 5oz. cups and pass around to the kids. Enjoy! Yield: 3 servings (serving size: 1 cup) Note: for tasting purposes, this recipe yields 8-3 oz. servings. Multiply the ingredients by 3 for 24-3 oz. servings.

Optional Math Challenges: For younger kids, count the number of ingredients and discuss volume vs. weight measures. For older kids, calculate the amount of each ingredient needed to serve the number of kids in your group.
