Activity Idea: Tasting Activity: Fruit Topped Mini Waffles

Source: HKC A La Cart Snack Fun booklet
Description: Kids learn healthy portions by preparing and tasting food
Grade: 1-5
Supplies: Makes 24 snack servings:
  • 48 Frozen mini waffles
  • 1-1/2 cups Sliced peaches or other fruit-in juice
  • 1-1/2 cups Unsweetened applesauce
  • 1-1/2 cups Fruit flavored low fat yogurt
  • Bowls and spoons for mixing
  • Measuring cups and spoons

Directions:

  1. Prior to activity, have participants wash hands thoroughly.
  2. Have kids assist with measurement and preparation as much as possible--assign them tasks.
  3. Drain sliced peaches.
  4. In bowl, blend applesauce with fruit flavored yogurt.
  5. For each serving:
    • spread 2 Tbsp. applesauce-yogurt mixture on a mini waffle.
    • top with 1 Tbsp. sliced peaches.
    • top peaches with a second mini waffle to make a sandwich.
    • wrap in plastic wrap to freeze, or eat immediately.

Discussion: Have students look at the food label on the waffle package. How many mini waffles are in a serving? How does this compare to the number of waffles in a one snack serving?

Math Facts for Older Kids: If 1/2 cup equals 1 serving of canned fruit, how much of a fruit serving does one mini waffle sandwich provide? ( Answer: 1 Tbsp. peaches + 1 Tbsp. applesauce = 2 Tbsp. (1/8 cup) or 1/4 of a fruit serving)
