Activity Idea: Breakfast Cereal Sampling

Description: Kids practice measuring, read food and nutrition labels
and sample cereals with different grains
Grades: Any

Supplies:

 

Four to five different cereals in boxes (for label reading)
3 oz. paper cups (for tasting cereals)
Measuring cups (for volume)
Small scale (for weighing)

During a “Walk Through the Pyramid”, Abilene High Students Give a “Thumbs Up” for Grains!

Directions:

1. Divide kids into cooperative groups, or do the activity as a class.
2.  Using the MyPyramid grain information, talk about the cereals, grains and other foods represented in the Grains Group.
3.  Have kids look at ingredients listed on the cereal boxes.
4. Using a flipchart or paper and pencils, ask kids to list all the different grains identified on the label.
5. Using the scale, ask kids to weigh 1 ounce of each type of cereal.
6. Using measuring cups, ask kids to determine the volume for each 1 ounce serving. Compare the differences in volume.
7. Allow kids to sample the different cereals and see if they can tell which grains they taste.
