Activity Idea: Identifying Breakfast Items by Food Group

Description: Kids identify and practice picking healthy breakfast foods
Grade: 1-3
Supplies:
  • Blackboard, flipchart, or dry erase board
  • MyPyramid poster (www.mypyramid.gov)

 

 

Directions:

  1. Download the MyPyramid poster and discuss the foods contained in each food group.
  2. Across the blackboard, list headings for each of the different MyPyramid food groups.
  3. Ask students what they like to eat for breakfast. Categorize the responses on the blackboard under the appropriate MyPyramid food group.
  4. Math Task: More and less concept. Which groups have MORE foods listed? Which groups have LESS foods listed?

Optional: Have students plan one or more breakfast menus from the foods listed on the blackboard. Include at least 3 food groups (Grains, Fruit, Milk) in the menus.
