Activity Idea: Pedometer Challenge

Source: Idea submitted by Jetmore Elementary School, Kansas
Description: Kids increase school day physical activity with a pedometer challenge
Grade: 4-6
Supplies:

Pedometer for each participant.
Printed sheet of the United States for each team

Directions:

  1. In the classroom, the teacher will give each child a pedometer, explain how to use and care for the pedometer and allow the kids to practice using it.
  2. The teacher will explain the challenge is to step their way across the United States using their pedometers.
  3. The teacher will divide the kids into teams and designate a team leader. It will be explained that each team member is to get 3,000 steps logged on their pedometer throughout the school day. If a team reaches their daily goal, they will color in a state on their team U.S. sheet.
  4. Throughout the challenge, kids are to set personal step goals and track their progress as well. Optional: Teams that meet the challenge of stepping across the U.S. receive a pedometer of their own and/or a healthy snack party.
