Activity Idea: Fraction Frisbee Fun

Source: Healthy Kids Challenge, Acting Up booklet
Description: Kids draw fractional pieces on a paper plate and play
a simple tag game

Grades: 1-4

Supplies:

• Paper plates (1 per person)
• Colored pencils, crayons, or markers (1 per person)

Vickie James and friend use paper plates for
active play

Directions:

The teacher/leader will:

1. Give each child a paper plate and writing instrument.
2.  Have them divide their plate into fractional pieces designated by the teacher/leader or of their choice, e.g. 1/2, 1/3, 3/4, 7/8; and color the portion of the pieces to show their fraction.
3.  Instruct kids to begin the tag game in a large area: On signal, players are to throw their plate at another person’s foot. All players continuously pick up another plate and throw at another persons’ foot as soon as they have thrown their plate. On the command, “STOP”, players pick up a plate and tell the group what fractional piece of the plate they are holding.

For Upper Level Grades:
The teacher/leader instructs kids to line up from largest to smallest fraction or find a fractional piece that when added to their fraction, forms a whole.
