Activity Idea: Building a Balanced "Trail" to Go!

Description: Kids use a trail mix recipe to group foods according to MyPlate, discuss breakfast menu options, and set healthy goals.
Grade: 3-5


  1. Talk about:
  2. Write the following trail mix recipe on the whiteboard:
    • 1/2 cup dry cereal
    • 1/2 cup pretzels
    • 1/4 cup pumpkin seeds
    • 1/4 cup cranraisins or other dried fruit pieces
    • 1/4 cup peanuts (or soy nuts, if peanut allergies exist)
  3. As a group, discuss/ask the following using the MyPlate icon:
    • The food group in which each ingredient belongs (Grains, Veggies, Fruits, Protein, Dairy).
    • Which food group is missing? (Dairy) What could be eaten with the trail mix, to make sure you are having all the food groups? (milk, yogurt, cheese)
    • Which food group is found in the greatest amount in this recipe? (Grains)
