Activity Idea: How Many Fruits and Veggies on YOUR Plate?

Source: Adapted from the HKC Setting Up for Success booklet
Description:

Kids are encouraged to eat a variety of veggies daily

Grade: 3-5
Supplies:

Directions:

  1. Show kids a MyPyramid Kids Poster and point out the different food groups.
  2. Explain you will focus on the fruit and vegetable food groups.
  3. Have the kids draw the MyPyramid template on their paper plate.
  4. Ask the kids what veggies they eat. Instruct them to write (or draw), in the Veggie section of the Pyramid, all the different veggies they usually eat in a "normal" day or two.
  5. Ask a volunteer to stand up and name one veggie on their plate. Write that veggie on the board. Ask others who had that veggie on their plate, to stand up as well and remain standing.
  6. Ask someone who is seated to stand up and name another veggie on their plate...and so on until all kids are standing.
  7. Ask kids to be seated. Look at the veggies listed on the board. Compare what is listed with the top 4 veggies most commonly eaten in the U.S. (potatoes, iceberg lettuce, onions, and tomatoes).
  8. Look at the colors of veggies listed on the board. Are all colors represented? (BLUE/PURPLE, GREEN, WHITE, YELLOW/ORANGE and RED)
  9. Challenge the kids to think about colors and eat a veggie they don't usually eat, for more variety in the next week. Follow up in a week.
