Hear, See, Do Healthy Messages

Hear – See – Do is how Mary Murphy, school nurse, is getting her healthy message to everyone at Fairfax Elementary!

Kids and teachers look forward to hearing Ms. Murphy’s Healthy Eating Tip each week as part of the morning announcements over the public address system.

Reinforcing the “tip” during each of her visits to 6 different classrooms during the week, Mary uses the Healthy Kids Challenge WOWS newsletter’s Healthy Tips to Go, and the Setting Up for Success booklet as resources. Keeping the information flowing, nine school nurses and other staff see the weekly HKC WOWS newsletter that Mary forwards to them.

Teaming up with the PE teacher for a twice weekly staff exercise class has helped make physical activity “do-able” for Mary! Helping market the healthy messages, Mary presented information on MyPyramid at staff in-service and they were clamoring for more!

All these healthy messages have been noticed! One parent, who is also a physician, told her he was excited about all the healthy messages seen in the school!

Think about how you can use a “Hear-See-Do” message to help kids, families and staff make AWE-some changes!

Linking Kids, Staff and Families

Using an “I Can…” attitude and collaboration to support student success, Fairfax Elementary is raising healthy habit awareness! Some of the wholesome happenings include:

  • A morning fitness tip announcement starts the day the healthy way!
  • A Monday newsletter connects families and staff using the information found in Wednesday WOWS and other HKC resources.
  • Teachers are stepping out to role-model. As an ice breaker, the staff listed the different vegetables they ate in the past week. One teacher "won" with 18 different vegetables!
  • Staff meetings feature WIN-WIN’s for AWE-some C.H.A.N.G.E.

Mary Murphy, school nurse, shares “I just had a teacher stop by this morning to congratulate me on the grant; and getting children and staff involved in raising awareness about healthy eating. This teacher expressed that they are so involved in educating and proficiency scores, they forget about children's health concerns.” Mary remarks, “It took me by surprise, because I am ALWAYS concerned about health! I think we are making small steps here, and it is exciting.”
Fairfax is keeping the information fun and addressing time constraint concerns to enhance learning and enable students continued success!
