"Got Milk...Without the Hidden Fat" Group Activity

Use this fun tasting activity for class, summer youth programs or a parent open house!

Materials Needed:

  • 3-32 oz. clear, plastic containers with lids
  • 4-1/2 cups melted shortening
  • Skim, 2%, whole milk (2-3 oz. per person for tasting
  • 3 oz. disposable cups
  1. Create containers that demonstrate the amount of fat a person would consume by drinking 3 cups of skim, 2%, or whole milk per day for a month.
    1. Measure the following amounts of shortening for each of the 3 containers: Skim-none, 2%-1-1/2 cups, Whole-3 cups
    2. Melt shortening and pour into designated container.
       
  2. Set up supplies for blindfold tasting to guess the skim, 2%, and whole milk samples.
    1. Use a permanent marker to label 3-30z. disposable cups with a (1), (2), or (3).
    2. Use the following code to pour the milk into the cups for tasting: (1) 2% milk, (2) skim milk (3) whole milk
       
  3. Have participants look at each of the 3 containers and explain what they represent. Discuss that making lower fat choices can add up to a healthy difference!
     
  4. Challenge participants to see if they can correctly guess the type of milk they are drinking when given the 3 samples, labeled 1, 2, or 3.

Drink Plenty of Water this Summer -- Family Tips

Water makes up 60-70% of our body, so give it what it needs by using these suggestions!

  • Drink a glass of water at breakfast, lunch and dinner.
  • Dilute your full strength juice, tea or coffee with water to get a little extra in the day.
  • For every sugared drink you drink daily, substitute a bottle or glass of water instead. 
  • Carry bottled water in your lunch, backpack, car, or on a walk or bike ride.
