Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds
“Connecting
a healthy body and healthy mind”, is the direction
of the Heston Academic Plus KidLink team. The team includes
the school nurse, a reading teacher, and the PE teacher
with additional teachers or parents depending on the
project they are implementing.
The KidLink
team members, in partnership with Drexel University,
help chart the course with healthy messages throughout
the school. The 6th grade “Girls Club” completed
their nutrition class under the guidance of Drexel University’s
staff. Using simple events such as food play for younger
kids, a magician for older kids, and a variety of physical
activity events, School Nurse, Pat Alexander says “a
series of little steps have been a success.”
As required by their school district, kids and their
parents will be learning about and using their BMI (body
mass index) as a base line to set physical activity
and nutrition goals.
Motivational
speaker, Les Brown has said, “Your goals are the
road maps that guide you and show you what is possible
for your life.” Heston Academic Plus staff and
students have stepped onto the path toward healthier
lives!
Linking Healthy Lifestyle with Academics
Improving
kids' health and impacting academic success has the
Heston Academic Plus classroom teachers, physical education
teacher, and school nurse collaborating to capitalize
on the benefits for all. The emphasis is on linking
together healthy eating, physical activity, reading,
and writing activities.
Having
started off with a family walk for the American Diabetes
Association last fall, a “girls club” and
health fair is keeping them on track this spring! A
community partner, Drexel University, lends a helping
hand to make this effort cohesive for students and staff
alike.
Healthy
Kids Challenge commends Heston Academic Plus School
as they strive for a healthy body/healthy mind connection.
The goal, healthy lifestyle changes for all!
