Awesome Challenge Ideas Submitted by KidLinks™
Healthy Kids Challenge says “Thank You” to our subscribers who took the Challenge by creating healthy activities for kids and adults.
Robin Birringer, 5th grade teacher, Ivywild Elementary, Colorado Springs, CO, did a parody of the Twelve Days of Christmas song to add physical activity to the holidays. She received a grant providing healthy snacks twice a day, and recognized the importance of also adding daily physical activity. Robin says, “I know that for most of these kids, I am the only example of health and fitness they have. So we do a challenge every month. I am so glad I found your newsletter!”

Tiny Tastes Can Add Up to Big Calories over the Holidays
Belinda Oldham, Wichita County Extension Agent, Leoti, KS, knew her Healthy Check Challenge program participants would need assistance to make healthy holiday choices. She and Tammy Simons, Kansas Kids C.A.N Initiative Coordinator, used information from Nebraska Extension and Healthy Kids Challenge, to put together a display table and presentation called, “Tiny Tastes Can Add Up to Big Calories over the Holidays”. The display table showed that over the course of a day,
tiny holiday “tastes” can add up!
Participants walked by tables of 9 food examples such as
- a broken cookie piece ( 30 calories)
- a small piece of peanut brittle that was brought into work for snacks ( 80 calories)
- a free beverage sample at the fast food restaurant visited at lunch ( 20 calories)
- three chips eaten at the snack table before the dinner party ( 50 calories)
After the tiny taste walk-through, the total “tasting” calories for the day were displayed. Leaders then had participants problem-solve healthier choices and discuss physical activity suggestions. At the end of the class the HKC Challenge of the Month was issued. Everyone took a copy of the “Challenge” and “tiny tastes” information home to encourage them through the holiday season.
