Healthy Role-modeling

They have healthy messages covered at Maude Trevvett Elementary by quilting together many KidLinks and resources! The pattern was started in February with "Healthy Kids Month" that featured nutrition and exercise activities for kids and families.

PE Teacher, Judy Hall, began by building staff awareness with a “Healthy Faculty Meeting" for K-5 staff with

  • fresh fruit served on the tables
  • water bottles for everyone
  • HKC slide show presentation
  • activities demonstrated from the HKC booklet “Acting Up”

For their positive role modeling, each week two “healthy” teachers are being recognized by displaying their picture and healthy quote in a main hallway; including their quote in morning announcements; and receiving a fruit basket.

The "Five a Day Club" has the students and faculty members documenting their daily 5 fruits & vegetables servings and their 30 minutes of activity outside school.

All look forward to getting together one Friday each month for “Fun Fruit Friday” using fresh fruit for a snack while they read a book that features the fruit. Then a healthy quilt was made by the first graders using magazine pictures of their favorite physical activities and healthy foods.

To tie all the messages together, the PTA hosted about 100 families at their monthly meeting that combined "Jump Rope for Heart" with a "Wealth of Health" evening featuring health professionals encouraging healthy lifestyles.

P.E. Teacher, Judy Hall, said “Another goal is encouraging active recess time.” They are pulling together resources from grants to encourage nutrition and physical activity for girls age 7-12 and provide “rainy day” indoor recess equipment for classrooms.

When one looks at a beautiful quilt, it takes a moment to appreciate all the details that contribute to the overall impact. At Maude Trevvett, a closer look reveals they are piecing together many elements to cover their kids, families, and staff with a blanket of healthy messages.

Stressing Teamwork for Healthy Results

A school-community team, involving a partnership amongst the Henrico County, local YMCA, parents and faculty, is the winning strategy used to make a difference for kids at Maude Trevvett Elementary. Their KidLinks’ game plan includes the following activities:

  • Rallying the faculty with a skit and using the "healthy food jokes" from HKC materials
  • February "Wealth of Health" month highlighting wholesome activities all month
  • Jump for Heart event featuring healthy snacks, activity centers, and a Gatorade fountain
  • YMCA director implementing sport tournaments after school, and kids nutrition lessons as a structured activity
  • Exploring the feasibility of adding a 5:30 pm snack to the after school program

Judy Hall, physical education teacher, says “our school culture stresses teamwork, both to children and to adults.” These successful events build an unbeatable combination!
