Healthy eating and physical activity solutions for kids

6 Tips for Writing Nutrition into the 2010 PEP Grant Application

You know you must include nutrition education in your 2010 PEP Grant application, but how are you going to do it?  Here are some tips from Healthy Kids Challenge and SPARK, the most field tested and research based PE program ever.  To date, more than 100 PEP grants have been awarded to organizations that chose to implement SPARK curriculum/training!

1.  Commit to creating a culture of health, where the total environment supports healthy eating and physical activity opportunities every day.

2.  Plan an IGNITE workshop into the proposal. For more information, Click here.

3.  Integrate nutrition education into physical education classes utilizing HKC resources, training, and distance assistance.

4.  Create and/or enhance physical activity and nutrition-related policies that promote healthy eating and physical activity throughout students’ everyday lives.

5.  Create or enhance the nutrition education component of your health education curriculum.

6.  Measure elementary and middle school student nutrition using appropriate assessment tools.

Healthy Kids Challenge and SPARK can help you in creating a healthy school environment no matter what stage you are at.  We can:

1.  Help you align your program with the HealthierUS School Challenge with comprehensive training for improving school meal programs, nutrition education, and physical education/physical activity.  Start with the HKC-SPARK IGNITE workshop.

2.  Help you utilize the Health Education Currculum Analysis Tool (HECAT) to identify, implement, and evaluate needed changes.  HKC has nutrition education curriculum that meet HECAT standards.

3.  Help you measure and evaluate the percentage of students consuming 2 or more fruit servings and 3 or more vegetable servings per day; four times per year for each year of the grant.  HKC can provide or design appropriate assessment tools and guide you throughout the process.
