5 Healthy Halloween Tips

Halloween and healthy eating: can the two go hand in hand?  You bet! With 5 simple healthy Halloween tips you can have your Halloween and health, too.

1.  Hand out healthier treats.  Look in discount stores or the grocery store’s seasonal aisle for inexpensive items in large quantities.  Also keep an eye out for festive packaging.  Pretzels are much more exciting in little orange and black single-serving bags.  


  • Boxes of raisins
  • Fruit cups, like applesauce, diced peaches
  • 100% fruit sticks
  • Nut-free trail mixes
  • Pretzels
  • Crackers
  • Mini cereal boxes

Non-food items:

  • Plastic spider rings
  • Bracelets
  • Barrettes
  • Small toys
  • Stickers
  • Tattoos
  • Coloring books
  • Bubbles
  • Trading cards
  • Miniature decks of playing cards
  • Party-favor size Play-Doh
  • Small change – mix pennies, nickels, and dimes

2.  Make healthier candy choices!  Yes, you can!

  • Dark chocolate instead of milk chocolate
  • No gummy or chewy candy that likes to stick to teeth
  • Buy it as close to Halloween as possible and don’t open it until Halloween

3.  Stock up on healthy snacks...before Halloween. 

  • Have plenty of fresh fruit and veggies in easy reach to help offset the influx of Halloween “treats”.

4.  Drink more water

  • Have everyone drink a glass of water before they go trick-or-treating and right after they return.

5.  Enjoy the treats, but set a limit for everyone in the house. 

  • Have kids pick out a set number of treats and give the rest to the “Halloween fairy” in exchange for some non-food item they like.  Healthy balance can be maintained through any holiday by returning to your usual habits in a sensible time frame.
