Dietary Guidelines In 3 Words: Enjoy Healthy Balance

At Healthy Kids Challenge we talk a lot about balancing the food you eat (calories in) with active play every day (calories out). It's no surprise that the Dietary Guidelines picked balance as a key message. "There's no quick fix. It's all about calories in and calories out," US Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said after announcing the release of the 2010 Dietary Guidelines.

One unexpected, often overlooked and underestimated, recommendation is for us to "Enjoy your food, but eat less." Thank you, Dietary Guidelines Committee! We know it's key to successful behavior change, but most people struggle with the idea that they can enjoy all foods as part of a healthy diet.

After all, we strive to help people help kids every day, to eat, move, and enjoy a healthy balance. Of course the details of increase these foods and reduce these foods are there in black and white in the policy document. For now, let's just let this blog post celebrate the emphasis of the Dietary Guidelines on enjoying healthy balance!
