Healthy Holiday Challenge Ideas Part 2

Picking up where we left off last week, this healthy holiday challenge makes Holiday Pinwheels into a sensory learning experience!

3. Help Kids Enjoy a Taste and Learn Activity

  • Talk about the different “feel” (texture) of holiday snack foods, such as soft, crunchy, crispy, and chewy.
  • Ask kids to identify the texture of each holiday pinwheel ingredient.
  • Explain that sometimes we choose certain foods because of how they feel in our mouth. Many crispy foods are fried, which means they are higher in fat than other foods. Regular chips are an example of a high fat crispy food.
  • Ask kids if they can think of lower fat, crisp foods. (Examples: pretzels, baked chips, raw carrots, the green peppers in these pinwheels). Ask what other red or green veggies could be used with, or instead of green peppers (Ideas: red peppers, fresh zucchini, fresh spinach, chopped tomatoes and cucumbers)

4. Challenge kids to take the Healthy Holiday Challenge…by setting one healthy snack goal.

Example Goals:

  • I will choose holiday snacks lower in fat and/or sugar. Think MORE veggies, fruits, whole grains, and low fat dairy; and LESS sugary high fat foods like soda, chips, and desserts.
  • I will ask myself if hunger is what I feel when tempted by holiday snacks. Are you eating out of boredom, tiredness, or nervousness? Instead of eating, engage in active play or drink a glass of water first.
  • With my parents' help, I will bring along healthy snacks, like fresh fruits or veggies to share with everyone at holiday gatherings.

Have them track their goal for 1 week, and follow up with them after the week ends.
