Healthy Holiday Berry Fruit Dip


This Healthy Holiday Berry Fruit Dip Recipe is a perfect complement for your Healthy Holiday Challenge goals. Kids can make it, taste it, and even learn a little from it, too! Enjoy!



  •     2 (8 oz.) cartons of low fat strawberry yogurt
  •     1 tsp. grated orange rind
  •     2 Tbsp. orange juice
  •     1/4 tsp. almond extract
  •     Strawberry and apple slices (enough for class to use with dip)

Prep time 10 mins., serves 32 tasting samples


  1.     Mix together yogurt, orange rind, orange juice and almond extract.
  2.     Using a tablespoon, serve a dip sample on small dessert plates. Let kids dip with the strawberry and apple slices.
  3.     Clean work area and utensils with warm soapy water. Rinse.

Explain that the Berry Fruit Dip you'll be preparing in class, along with the fruit, can be used for a healthy snack at home for upcoming holiday parties and gatherings.

Suggest that kids "model" healthy eating by preparing and sharing this recipe with others. (Provide recipe handouts to take home.)

While making the recipe, let kids assist with measuring, stirring and serving classmates the samples.

While kids are tasting, ask if using a dip like this encourages them to eat more fruit?

Take a vote and graph the "yes" and "no" answers on the board.

Point out that even though the dip encourages people to eat more fruit, it does contain sugar.

Have a volunteer look at the yogurt carton ingredient list for sugar. Read the Nutrition Facts label and identify the amount of sugar. Explain that milk has a natural sugar, lactose.

One cup of plain (no sugar added) yogurt has about 19 grams (g) of natural sugar.

To calculate the amount of added sugar in 1 cup of flavored yogurt, subtract 19g from the grams of sugar listed on the Nutrition Facts label.

Example: 33g sugar (listed on Nutrition Facts label) - 19g (natural lactose) = 14g added sugar.

Ask kids to draw a conclusion. (A little dip may be good to encourage eating fruit, but a lot could lead to eating a lot of extra sugar.)
