Snack Attack
Twenty seven Johnson County, Kansas Parks and Recreation District afterschool program directors and Children’s Service Specialists found out how helping kids get healthier just got easier with Healthy Kids Challenge® (HKC)!

Vickie L James, RD, LD, Director of HKC provided a workshop to guide simple solutions for incorporating fun, healthy eating and movement activities into their existing after school programs. An emphasis was placed on healthy snacking. Starting in March 2011, the directors and their program staff have made a commitment to following best practice guidelines for snacks. This includes:

  • Self serve – Allows kids to learn to make healthy choices and understand a healthy serving size as well as practicing food skills
  • Snack time allowance – Snack time is set for a period of time to allow kids to choose when to have their snack based on hunger and thirst, not the clock
  • Water and skim milk - The beverages of choice helping guide nutrient intake and hydration with a Drink Think best practice
  • Lower fat and added sugar snack options - Including more fruits and vegetables and whole grains to help build a healthier pyramid intake

Director feedback about the Snack Attack training was enthusiastic!

  • “My kids will LOVE the recipe ideas and the games you’ve shared with us today!”
  • “This was well worth my time and something I can take back and implement easily!”
  • “On a scale of 1 to 5, this workshop was a 10 plus!”

Teaching our students to maintain a healthy balance with eating and exercise is our top priority. The SPARK program is helping provide the tools and training to achieve this goal”, shared Corinn Giaquinto, Health and Physical Education instructor, Thomas Edison Middle School, West Orange, New Jersey.

Hats off to Thomas A. Edison Middle School and their entire school district in West Orange. Vickie L. James, Registered Dietitian and Director of Healthy Kids Challenge (HKC), the exclusive nutrition education partner for SPARK, was the trainer for the West Orange training, the first ever SPARK and HKC nutrition education training

“From classroom to PE to wellness council members K-12, the representation and enthusiasm shown at the workshop tells me the commitment this district has to student well being. They truly understand the strategy of using good nutrition and physical activity to create a culture of health in the schools that can do nothing short of fueling student success." Contact us to schedule your training!

Child Care Providers Training

According to an October 12, 2009, Associated Press article, child care is the next frontier in fighting childhood obesity; elementary school efforts need to get a start earlier in a child's life. Three out of four children ages 2-5 spend at least part of their day in child care, 50% in formal child care settings.

The Platte County (Missouri) Health Department is on the cutting edge in this arena! The health department sponsored a HKC led workshop for child care facility directors and lead teachers. The training offered ideas for

  • healthier snacks and meals
  • how to add more active play minutes to the day
  • team building for staff support
  • easy ways to support families with healthy change
Platte County, MO. Preschool directors and teachers attend healthy workshop

100% of participants agreed they would go back to their facilities and in the next month, implement at least two healthy changes, one for healthy eating and one for physical activity. Site visits one week after the workshop showed many of these action steps were already under way or in place. Great job!

Training is key, contact us today!
