Families
can try out these simple healthy eating ideas everywhere they live,
learn, work and
play!
- 5 A Day the Tasty Way! - Create fruit and vegetable appeal by
enhancing snacks and side dishes with color! For picnics and family
gatherings layer a container or bowl with a variety of colorful sliced
fruit choices, serve a side dish of corn relish with added green pepper
and sliced cherry tomatoes to add interest. (Remember to keep foods
safe by keeping them cool in coolers or on ice.) Build snacks with
different colors such as an apple/raisin/cinnamon/low-fat cream cheese
tortilla wrap or a dish of sliced bananas, strawberries, frozen
blueberries, and a dollop of low-fat yogurt eaten with a spoon.
- Snack Attack! Outdoor summer activities require "grab
and go" snacks. Keep it simple and plan ahead to provide healthy snack
options for the family. Mix a few favorite dry cereals together
and add dried fruits and nuts/seeds for a healthy, quick granola snack.
Fill a plastic "baggie" with peanut butter on crackers or on a flour
tortilla rolled up. Add a few
baby carrots to another "baggie" and you have simple snacks to carry in
a pocket
or backpack.
- Breakfast GO POWER! - With plenty of daylight, summer days
run long, so make sure to start the day with a healthy energy-packed
breakfast. Dairy foods work great at breakfast to provide a healthy
source of calcium and protein. Team a dairy food such as low fat
yogurt, cheese, and milk; with whole grain granola,
tortilla/toast, and cereal for a long lasting energy source.
- Discover Smart Servings! - Use familiar everyday items to imagine
the "Look" of a healthy serving size. For example, 1 deck of playing
cards is roughly the size of a 3 oz. cooked
meat serving. One tennis ball is roughly the size of 1/2 cup rice or
pasta. Use these guides when eating at family cookouts this summer. For
more examples and other helpful smart serving tips go to the
CIGNA Fit and Fun Families Toolkit Web site mentioned above and click
on "Discovering Smart Servings".
- Drink Think! - Choose to drink more water this summer
by having it available wherever you go! Water is healthy! It's an
inexpensive beverage from the tap and travels well. Fill a large
thermos or container with water before going to picnics or cookouts.
When traveling, fill sports bottles at home and bring in the car. Add
slices of lemon or lime to add some interest to the flavor, if needed.
